He studied at the Academy of Arts (1914–1918), then at the Petrograd Free Art Workshops (1919–1923) with K.S. Petrova-Vodkina, D.N. Kurdova, A.A. Rylova. Was influenced by K.S. Petrov-Vodkin, with whom he traveled to Samarkand (1921). He was a member of the “Circle of Artists” association, aesthetically close to OST, and the “October” association. He worked as a theater artist and book graphic artist, and illustrated children's publications. For illustrations to “The History of a City” M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin (1935) received the Grand Prix in Paris. In the 1940s Samokhvalov worked a lot as a theater artist. He designed a number of productions: “Dowry” (1935) and “Warm Heart” (1943) by A.N. Ostrovsky, “Glass of Water” by E. Scribe (1943) and others. Author of the autobiographical book “My Creative Path” and the story “In the Years of the Restless Sun.” The artist’s works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and other museums and private collections.
