Full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1947), People's Artist of the USSR (1960), full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1956). Chairman of the Union of Artists of the Armenian SSR (1947-1951). Laureate of the State Prize of the USSR (1941). In 1897-1904. studied at MUZHVZ, in the workshops of V.A. Serov and K.A. Korovina. In the 1900s participated in exhibitions of art associations “Blue Rose”, “Union of Russian Artists”, “World of Art”, “Four Arts”. The painting of P. Gauguin and A. Matisse had a strong influence on Saryan’s style. From 1910 to 1913 traveled to Turkey, Egypt, Iran. In 1917 Saryan moved to Russia, in 1921 - to Armenia. The main theme of his work is the nature of Armenia. He painted portraits and worked as a book graphic artist and theater artist. In 1926-1928 the artist lived and worked in Paris. Saryan’s work played a leading role in the formation of the national school of Armenian Soviet painting. The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and the State Art Gallery of Armenia.
