Russian artist, scientist, writer, public figure. A prominent representative of the “Amaravella” group - a community of cosmist artists, followers of N. Roerich. Born in St. Petersburg in January 1905 in the family of an officer. After the family moved to Moscow, he studied at the Peterpaulshule gymnasium and in 1922 entered the Moscow Engineering and Economic Institute. In the early 1920s, Boris Smirnov-Rusetsky met the artist Pyotr Fateev; their meeting in the future will lead to the emergence of the Amaravella group - the most significant association of Russian cosmist artists. The beginning of the correspondence between Smirnov-Rusetsky and Kandinsky dates back to 1923, which continued until 1929. In 1926, Smirnov-Rusetsky met with Nicholas Roerich, who had arrived in Russia. On the recommendation of Roerich, Smirnov-Rusetsky entered VKHUTEMAS, where he studied in the graphics department under I. Nivinsky, V. Favorsky and N. Kupriyanov. In 1927 and 1928, Smirnov-Rusetsky’s works were presented at exhibitions in New York and Chicago, before which the artist exhibited his paintings at the “Makovets” exhibition at VKHUTEMAS. In 1941, the artist was arrested. His works from this period were destroyed. Sentence: ten years in the camps, lifelong exile for “anti-Soviet propaganda” and “connection with the Russian emigrant N.K. Roerich.” In 1954 - amnesty and rehabilitation. In 1967 and 1969, personal exhibitions of paintings were held in Moscow, and in subsequent years - in museums in Pskov, Kostroma, Kyiv, Novosibirsk, Zagorsk, Zvenigorod, Leningrad. The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Museum of Oriental Peoples, in many regional museums in Russia, as well as abroad.
