Landscape artist, took part in exhibitions of the Association of Itinerants. From 1845 to 1849 he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he often communicated with K. A. Trutovsky. In 1863, S., with a group of Russian artists, including his fellow Kursk residents S. O. Borodaevsky and V. G. Schwartz, visited Barbizon, France, making sketches from nature. Upon returning to Russia, he permanently lived on his estate in the Kursk province (the village of Ganzhovka, Sudzhansky district). His most famous paintings were created here - “Seeing off to the city for boys appointed as recruits” (1860s, State Tretyakov Gallery), “Fortune telling of girls on wreaths about marriage” (1860s, Chernigov Art Museum), etc.
