Sokov Leonid Petrovich

Soviet and American artist, sculptor. One of the most famous representatives of the social art movement. In 1956-1961. studied at the Moscow Secondary Art School at the USSR Academy of Arts (MSHS). In 1961 he entered the Moscow Higher Art and Industrial School (formerly Stroganov), the department of monumental and decorative plastic arts, where he studied with V. I. Derunov and S. L. Rabinovich. From 1966 to 1969 works in the same studio with A. Kosolapov and B. Orlov. Since 1977 he has been participating in exhibitions abroad. I became acquainted with the social art movement in the early 1980s. in New York. In 1983, the first foreign solo exhibition was held at the Strorefront Gallery, New York. In 2001 he exhibited in the Russian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In 2012, a large-scale retrospective of the artist was held in Moscow at the Museum of Modern Art on Gogolevsky Boulevard. In 2016, the State Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val hosted a large-scale exhibition of the artist “Leonid Sokov. Unforgettable Meetings.”
