Soviet photographer, one of the founders of Soviet photo reporting, master of documentary photography. In 1922 - 1924 he worked as a retoucher in private photography "Rembrandt" in Moscow. Since 1923, he worked on the editorial staff of the weekly magazine “Moscow Proletary”. Since 1924, he collaborated with the magazines Ogonyok, USSR in Construction, and Our Achievements. Since 1925 – participant of exhibitions. In 1928, he participated in the all-Union photo exhibition “Soviet Photography for 10 Years,” where he was awarded a 1st degree diploma. During the Great Patriotic War, he photographed a lot at the front as a correspondent for the newspaper “Front Illustration”. Shaikhet’s photographs were published in the newspapers Pravda, Krasnaya Zvezda, and Komsomolskaya Pravda. In the post-war years he worked for the magazine Ogonyok.
