Soviet graphic artist, full member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1953), People's Artist of the USSR (1967), laureate of the USSR State Prize, corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the GDR. He studied in Kyiv in the studio of N. A. Prakhov (1919-22) and in Moscow with D. N. Kardovsky (1923-28). Chairman of the board of the Moscow organization of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR (MOSKh) in 1959-61, 1966-68 and 1972, secretary of the board of the Union of Artists of the USSR (since 1968). Mainly an illustrator. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, he produced a number of political posters and a cycle of easel drawings, “We will not forget, we will not forgive!” imbued with angry pathos. (1942, Tretyakov Gallery, USSR State Prize, 1943; see illustration), vividly telling about the suffering and courage of the Soviet people in the fight against the enemy. He created a number of paintings. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, 2 other orders, as well as medals.
