Russian artist, painter and graphic artist, one of the original representatives of neoclassicism. In 1906 he graduated from the Stroganov Art and Industrial School in the class of chasing and entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he studied with D. N. Kardovsky. Having received an academic pension (1912), he traveled around Italy (1913–1914). He was close to the historical-retrospective direction of the World of Art, although he was not one of its members. He painted stylized antique portraits, landscapes, still lifes, mythological and genre scenes. He painted the Church of St. Nicholas the Pleasant in the Italian city of Bari (architect A.V. Shchusev, 1910-1913), worked as a book illustrator, magazine cartoonist and film artist. From 1921 to 1935 lived in France, heading a school-workshop together with A.E. Yakovlev. In 1935 he returned to the USSR and received a personal workshop at the Leningrad Academy of Arts. Participated in the design of the interiors of the Moscow Library. V. I. Lenin. In 1937, he was arrested “on suspicion of espionage” and spent 10 years in exile in Magadan, where he designed performances and concerts of the local Musical and Drama Theater. He was subsequently rehabilitated. After his release, he taught at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts. In 1954, Shukhaev’s personal exhibition took place. His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Literary Museum of Moscow and other museums.
