Honored Artist of the RSFSR, State Prize Laureate in 1949. In 1922, he was sent to study in Moscow on a Komsomol voucher. He studied at the workers' faculty of arts, then at the painting department of VKHUTEMAS-VKHUTEIN (graduated in 1931). He gained fame thanks to the film "Krasnoznamenka" (1933, Tretyakov Gallery). Author of historical and everyday compositions, portraits, landscapes, still lifes. The main theme of the artist’s work was the peasant theme (“Visiting a collective farmer”, “In his native village”, On the collective farm fields”, “Motherhood”, “Labour Nights”, “1919”, “People’s Memory”, etc.). Shurpin often came to his homeland, lived and worked in the village of Rudnya, Ershichi district. In 1969, an art gallery was created in the village of Shumyachi gallery, which is based on the collection of paintings donated by F.S. Shurpin. The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery and in many regional museums.
