Architect, academician, author of the Lenin Mausoleum. In 1897, Alexei Shchusev graduated with a Gold Medal from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. His teachers were L.N. Benois and I.E. Repin. For the next three years he continued his studies in Austria, Italy, France, England, and Belgium. Since 1901, Alexey Shchusev served in the office of the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod. During this period, he developed his own view of church architecture. And in 1908-1912. he built his most favorite creation - the Church of the Intercession on Bolshaya Ordynka. Elizaveta Fedorovna Romanova invited him to conduct work in a group of architects. The architect's work was immediately appreciated by his contemporaries. In 1908 A.V. Shchusev became a full member, and in 1910 - an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Until 1917, Alexey Shchusev built orphanages for children, designed educational buildings, and structures for railway employees. In 1908-1911 taught at the Drawing School of St. Petersburg. In 1913, Shchusev moved to Moscow and continued teaching at the Stroganov School, and from 1914 at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. After the October Revolution, Shchusev became a generally recognized authority on Soviet architecture. Since 1918, he has been the chief master of the First State Architectural Workshops, the creator of the “New Moscow” master plan project, and the head of the architectural design workshop of the Moscow City Council (1932-1937). From 1922 to 1929 - Chairman of the Moscow Architectural Society. In 1926-1929. Alexey Viktorovich Shchusev was the director of the Tretyakov Gallery. The number of buildings built by the architect during the Soviet period is enormous. Among them are residential buildings and theaters, metro stations, Kazansky railway station, Moskvoretsky Bridge, the ensemble of buildings of the USSR Academy of Sciences on Leninsky Prospekt.
