Matveev is an outstanding artist of the first half of the twentieth century, the largest representative of symbolism in sculpture. In 1896–1899 he studied at the Bogolyubov Drawing School in Saratov with V.V. Konovalov and T.P. Salvini-Baracca, at the same time with Konovalov in the studio at the Saratov Society of Fine Arts. In 1899 he entered the MUZHVIZ as a volunteer student. He studied under the guidance of S. M. Volnukhin and P. P. Trubetskoy. In 1900–1901 he received a small silver medal and the S. M. Tretyakov Prize for sculptural studies. In 1901–1905 he worked in the ceramic workshop of S. I. Mamontov “Abramtsevo” behind the Butyrskaya outpost in Moscow, in 1907–1912 - in the art and ceramic workshops of P. K. Vaulin and O. O. Geldwein in Kikerin near St. Petersburg. In 1906–1907, on a scholarship from the E. D. Polenova Foundation, he studied in private art studios in Paris. He exhibited his works at exhibitions of the Moscow Association of Artists (since 1905), “Blue Rose” (1907), “Wreath” (since 1908). He was a member and exhibitor of the associations Union of Russian Artists (since 1910), “World of Art” (since 1912), “Jack of Diamonds” (since 1910). In 1924 he became one of the founders of the Four Arts association, and from 1926 he was a member of the Society of Russian Sculptors. In 1918–1948 he taught at the Petrograd State Free Art Training Workshops - the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. I. E. Repin; in 1932–1934 he was director of the All-Russian Academy of Arts. In 1931 he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR. In the 1930s - 1940s he worked on projects for monuments to A. M. Gorky, A. P. Chekhov, A. S. Pushkin and others.
