Tomsky Nikolai Vasilievich (1900-1984).

Soviet sculptor. People's Artist of the USSR (1960), full member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1949; president in 1968-83), Hero of Socialist Labor (1970). He studied at the Leningrad Art and Industrial College (1923-27) with V.V. Lishev. He taught at the Moscow Art Institute (since 1948; rector in 1964 - 70). While participating in the restoration of monumental and decorative sculpture in Leningrad, he studied the traditions of the Russian school of sculpture of the 19th century, which formed the basis of his plastic manners. In his best works of the 30-40s. he, combining the individual and the typical, a characteristic gesture and carefully modeled forms, created images imbued with heroic pathos (monument to S. M. Kirov in Leningrad, bronze, granite, opened in 1938, State Prize of the USSR, 1941; portraits of I. D. Chernyakhovsky, 1947, State Prize of the USSR, 1948, and N. V. Gogol, 1951, State Prize of the USSR, 1952, both marble, Tretyakov Gallery). From the second half of the 50s. Tomsky turned to the search for expressive and active forms in monumental compositions (monuments to V.I. Lenin in Berlin, granite, 1970, Lenin Prize, 1972, and in Tashkent, bronze, granite, 1974, USSR State Prize, 1979); in his portrait work, the individual characteristics of the model deepen, the sculpting style becomes more plastic (portraits of D. Rivera, bronze, 1956-57, Tretyakov Gallery, and S. N. Sergeev-Tsensky, sandstone, granite, 1962, Kursk Regional Art Gallery). USSR State Prize (1949, 1950).
