Russian impressionist sculptor. He worked in private studios and in his own workshop in Milan. In 1897‒1906 lived in St. Petersburg and Moscow (taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture), from 1906 - in France, USA, Italy. In his works (mainly genre and portrait figurines, as well as portrait busts), T. strove for the vital spontaneity of the image. Sharply and accurately capturing the movement, gesture, and character of the model, he captured it in quick plastic sketches. Made using the sculpting technique with expressive separate strokes, often retaining the sculptor’s fingerprints on raw clay, they are distinguished by a picturesque texture of their plastic form, rich in light and shadow effects (“Moscow Cabman”, 1898, portrait of L.N. Tolstoy, 1899, both bronze, Russian Museum, Leningrad). Author of the monument to Alexander III in St. Petersburg (bronze, 1900‒06); the expression of ponderous brute force inherent in the monument gave it an objectively accusatory meaning.
