Graphic artist, painter, illustrator, teacher. Member of the Union of Journalists of the USSR, member of the USSR Union of Artists, member of the Moscow Union of Artists, member of the USSR Art Fund. Since 1992 - member of the International Association of Artists at UNESCO, Honored Cultural Worker. Honored Worker of Culture (1994). In 1941 he entered the art and graphic department of the Moscow Art Teachers Institute. A year later he was drafted into the army, took part in battles on the front line, and made drawings that were published in the military press. He was wounded, shell-shocked, and awarded military decorations. After the end of the war, he continued his studies at the institute, graduating in 1948. From the same year he began to participate in exhibitions. In 1952 he began teaching at the Moscow Regional Art School “In Memory of 1905”, and from 1956 at the city art school No. 1 on Kropotkinskaya. Author of the original pedagogical methodology. He collaborated with various periodicals (the newspaper “Trud”, the magazines “Around the World”, “Culture and Life”, “Agitator”, “Knowledge is Power”, “Family and School”, “Young Naturalist”, “Soviet-Chinese Friendship”, “Soviet Miner” and many others), and in 1960 he joined the Union of Journalists. In 2010, S. Baryshnikova’s book “Mark Ivanovich Ulupov” was published.
