Van Kessel Jan

Flemish artist Member of the Antwerp art guild (since 1645). He continued the traditions of his grandfather Jan Bruegel. He painted flowers, insects, and allegorical scenes that combined detailed images of fauna and elements of the four elements. A master of depicting the most precise details, van Kessel used information from scientific texts as sources when working, which helped him achieve photographic authenticity of his images. The works of Jan Van Kessel are presented in the collections of the Hermitage, the Thyssen-Bornemiets Museum, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium, and the Harvard Museum of Fine Arts.
