He studied at the natural sciences department of Moscow University (1902-1907), simultaneously visiting the studios of N.A. Martynov (since 1899) and K.F. Yuona (1904-1906). He also worked in the studio of K.F. Kapstein in Berlin (1910). Vatagin visited zoos and museums in Holland, France, England, Italy and Greece. He worked in India and Malaya Zemlya, in Vladivostok and Paris, in Central Asia and the Far North, in the Caucasus, Crimea, on the Amur and Volga, on the lakes of Lapland, in the Askania-Nova nature reserve. He worked a lot for the Darwin Museum, collaborated with S.I. Ognev and illustrated many scientific zoological publications. He completed works for famous publishing houses of the first half of the 20th century - I.N. Knebel, I.D. Sytin and others. He illustrated textbooks and atlases, the German edition of A. Bram “The Life of Animals,” a guide to the Moscow Zoological Garden in 1915, children’s books by L.N. Tolstoy, I.S. Turgenev, V.V. Bianchi, D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak, D. London, R. Kipling, V. Inber and E. Seton-Thompson. The artist continued to illustrate children's books and scientific publications after the October Revolution. One of Vatagin’s significant works is the creation of illustrations for his favorite book “Mowgli” by R. Kipling. Vatagin also illustrated his own book, “The Image of an Animal. Notes of an Animal Artist,” which was first published in 1957. Vatagin is a full member of the USSR Academy of Arts, a laureate of the State Prize of the USSR and the RSFSR, and a generally recognized “patriarch” of Russian animal art. The artist’s works are in the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and other museums in Russia and abroad.
