French post-impressionist painter, founder of expressionism among the Fauves. He did not receive any special education, but began painting in 1893. In addition to painting, at different periods of his life, Vlaminck was fond of bicycle racing, performed with a gypsy orchestra, and wrote books - 20 novels, erotic stories, poems, essays, and the autobiography “Dangerous Turns.” The dynamism of the compositions and the brightness of the colors of his early works made a great impression on another representative of post-impressionist painting, Andre Derain, and from 1899 they worked together for some time, forming the so-called. "Shatu school" Vlaminck's early paintings show an interest in different styles of painting; in some of them the influence of impressionism, neo-impressionism and fauvism is noticeable. In 1907, Vlaminck became acquainted with the work of Cézanne, and in the works of 1907–1909 he developed his own style. He was distinguished by a simplified geometrized interpretation of objects, which the artist learned from Cézanne, the rendering of subtle gradations of light and the use of bright contrasting colors. A number of Vlaminck's works showed his interest in Cubism. In the works of the 1920s and 1930s, he placed less emphasis on the volume of forms, emphasizing the contrast of light and shadow, creating dynamic, emotional paintings.
