Soviet theater artist, People's Artist of the USSR (1965). He studied at the Stroganov School (1913-18) with F. F. Fedorovsky, in the workshops of the People's House (1913-16) with V. D. Polenov and at VKhUTEMAS (1918-23) with A. V. Lentulov, V. E. Tatlin, D. P. Shterenberg and others. Member of the OST. In 1924-40, the main artist of the theater named after. MGSPS (now named after Mossovet), in 1941 -49 - Musical Theater named after. K. S. Stanislavsky and V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, from 1951 - Maly Theater. V.’s early works were influenced by constructivism (“Storm” by Bill-Belotserkovsky, 1925, MGSPS Theater). In subsequent years, V. turned to a combination of three-dimensional and picturesque decorations and assigned an important role to the lyrical landscape. Among V.’s works: “The Family of Taras” by Kabalevsky (1951; USSR State Prize, 1952) - at the Musical Theater named after. K. S. Stanislavsky and V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko; “Green Street” by Surov (1948; USSR State Prize, 1949), “Second Love” by Maltsev and Venkstern (1950; USSR State Prize, 1951) - at the Moscow Art Theater; “Smart Things” by Marshak (1965) - at the Maly Theater. Awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and medals.
