Soviet artist and museologist, director of the State Tretyakov Gallery in 1932 - 1937. Originally from Nizhny Novgorod, where he received his initial art education in the workshop of A.O. Karelina. Continuing it in St. Petersburg, he studied at the drawing school of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists with Nicholas Roerich and Arkady Rylov. He also took lessons from Pyotr Chistyakov, one of the greatest masters of historical, genre and portrait painting of the early 20th century. Afterwards he lived in Moscow, where he became one of the founders of the artistic group AHRR. In 1964 he held a personal exhibition. In addition to his artistic activities, he was involved in museum work. From 1920 he served as director of the Central Handicraft Museum of the Supreme Council of the National Economy, and from 1932 - director of the State Tretyakov Gallery. Voltaire's paintings were demonstrated at all-Union and anniversary exhibitions and are kept in the collection of the State Russian Museum and other large collections.
