Painter, graphic artist, theater artist, monumentalist, teacher. He received his artistic education at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1905-1913), in the workshop of D. N. Kardovsky. In the second half of the 1910s. Yakovlev was engaged in portrait painting and drawing, achieving great success in the technique of sanguine. In the summer of 1917, Yakovlev, as a pensioner of the Academy of Arts, went to Mongolia, China and Japan. The journey took two years and resulted in a series of works about China. Subsequently, the artist settled in Paris, and his further life took place abroad. Yakovlev has always been attracted to the exotic. In 1924-25 he took part in an expedition to North and Central Africa organized by Citroen. The paintings and drawings brought from the trip brought Yakovlev great success. In 1926 he was awarded the Legion of Honor. In 1931-32 The artist again went on an expedition to the countries of the East - he visited Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia and China. And again, the result of his trip was a whole series of artistic works, mainly of an ethnographic nature, but invariably marked by a virtuoso drawing technique. In the 1920s. Yakovlev's works were often exhibited in Europe and America, his art enjoyed great success, although it still caused controversial assessments. The artist’s connection with Russia did not break either: in 1928, an exhibition of his works was held in the halls of the Academy of Arts. Yakovlev was engaged in easel painting and graphics, monumental and theatrical decorative art. In 1934, Yakovlev received an invitation to take the place of professor at the Academy of Arts in Boston. Until 1938 he lived in the USA. Died in Paris. Works by A.E. Yakovlev's works are in private collections and museums in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, USA, Japan, and Georgia. In Russia there are much fewer of them; these are mainly early works stored in the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, and some provincial museums.
