Southerner Sergei Nikitich

Southerner Sergei Nikitich (1862 – 1933).

Southerner was born in Moscow in 1862 in the family of Nikita Vyuzhanin, a guard at the Stroganov School. He received his artistic education at the Stroganov Art School, where he entered in 1882. He worked as a drawing teacher at Morozov's factory, at a real school in Panevsk, and from 1889 he taught in Bialystok, where the famous Russian artist S.Yu. Zhukovsky later became his student. Since 1896 S.N. The southerner lived in Italy - in Rome, Venice, Naples, Florence, and on the island of Capri. As an Italian artist, he was connected by friendship with academic painters - F.A. Bronnikov, P.A. and A.A. Svedomskiy, S.V. Bakalovich, A.A. Rizzoni. In 1892, during a short stay in Russia, the artist was introduced to P.P. Chistyakov, whose workshop he visited for a year. Yuzhanin’s painting “Roman Courtyard” was purchased in 1898 by the famous Russian philanthropist and art collector P.M. Tretyakov for his gallery. The bulk of the artist’s creative heritage - 865 works - remained in Italy. The collection of the Samara Art Museum contains about 40 works of painting and graphics by Yuzhanin; his works are also in the collections of the museum-estate of A.N. Tolstoy, the Khabarovsk Art Museum, the descendants of the artist’s family, and in private collections.
