Born in the city of Chisinau. He studied at the decorative department of the First State Art Studio in Leningrad and at the same time at the State Institute of Art History. In the 1920s, he began working as an illustrator in the Leningrad magazines Rezets, Perelom, Stroika, and Young Proletarian. In 1929, he met P. Filonov, became his follower, and in 1930 began attending the “School of Masters of Analytical Art.” Member of the Leningrad branch of the USSR Union of Artists. He worked at the Lenfilm film studio under the direction of A. Arapov, and was a production designer for several films. He survived the siege of Leningrad and was evacuated to Kazakhstan in 1943, where he was appointed to the Central United Film Studio of the country. After the end of the war, he remained in Almaty as a production designer at the Kazakhfilm studio (since 1955, the chief artist of the film studio). Honored Artist of the Kazakh SSR. He taught art history at the Almaty Art School, the Academy of Architecture, and at screenwriting courses at the Kazakhfilm film studio. Graphic and pictorial works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and the Museum. A. Pushkin, State Museum of Art of Kazakhstan, etc.
