A Muscovite by birth, Nikolai Semenovich Zaitsev painted mainly landscapes, so he traveled a lot, trying to find a place that resonated in the artist’s soul. In 1902, N. Zaitsev entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied with A.M. Vasnetsova. As a student, he began exhibiting at the exhibitions of the Moscow Society of Artists and the Union of Russian Artists, of which he became a member in 1912, after receiving the title of artist. Among the works written by the painter before the revolution of 1917, the following works should be highlighted: “Lonely Graves”, “Summer Evening”, “Corner of the Province”, “Harvesting Bread”, “Trinity (Trinity-Sergiev Posad)”, “Garden”, etc. Wrote by N.S. Zaitsev and still lifes, tried his hand at painting portraits. I entered my new life organically. In 1919 he participated in the Second State Exhibition of Paintings. In subsequent years, he continued to work (“Before the Mirror,” “Old House,” “Peasant,” “Province,” “Construction,” “Bird Cherry”) and participated in exhibitions, in particular, of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AHKhR) and the Association of Realist Artists. Paintings by N.S. Zaitsev's works are in many museums across the country: they are represented, for example, both in the respected Astrakhan State Art Gallery and in one of the main repositories of Russian art - the State Tretyakov Gallery. For many years N.S. Zaitsev was engaged in teaching work - in gymnasiums (1910-1914) and secondary schools in Moscow (1922-1934).
