Lev Zhegin was born into the family of architect F. O. Shekhtel. He received his first art education at the school-studio of K. F. Yuon in 1909 - 1910. Later he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, which after the revolution was transformed into the Free Art Workshops. In 1913, together with V.N. Chekrygin Zhegin illustrated V. Mayakovsky’s first book “I”. In 1921 he joined the famous Moscow group “Makovets”, working in which he became increasingly inclined towards religious symbolism.
